COBRA & Continuation Coverage

What Is COBRA Insurance?

COBRA (Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act) allows you to keep your group health insurance after leaving your job—usually for up to 18 months. This coverage helps you maintain the same benefits, doctors, and prescriptions while you transition to a new plan or employment.

You can elect COBRA coverage if you leave your job voluntarily, as long as your employer’s plan qualifies for COBRA. The option is available for a limited time after your employment ends.

You generally have 60 days from the date you receive your COBRA notice or from the date your coverage ends, whichever is later, to choose whether to enroll.

In certain situations, such as disability or a second qualifying event, COBRA coverage may be extended up to 29 or 36 months, depending on the circumstances.

You are responsible for paying the full premium your employer used to pay for your coverage, plus a small administrative fee. This can be significantly higher than what you paid while employed.

You can switch to another health plan during open enrollment periods or if you qualify for a special enrollment event, but COBRA coverage itself remains separate until you terminate it or it expires.

Failure to make timely COBRA premium payments can result in loss of continuation coverage. Most plans provide a grace period (often 30 days) to pay late premiums, but coverage can be terminated if payment is not received within that timeframe.

COBRA coverage is retroactive to the date your group health insurance ended, as long as you pay all required premiums for the period.
